TeamLab: Not just an installation but a borderless world

TeamLab was founded in 2001. The founder and chief representative of TeamLab is Toshiyuki Inoko. TeamLab is a Tokyo-based digital artists collaborative group including artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians, architects, web and print graphic designers, and editors. They work together to achieve a balance between art, science, technology, and creativity, and to let humans experience art without borders. In other words, they want to blur the line between art and human and expand art and human relationship through digital technology.

TeamLab has created so many exhibitions delivering a borderless world between art and human. One of them is "Borderless." According to Inoko, "The world in which we live is full of borders. But none of those borders were there in the first place. Except for physical ones, most borders have been drawn arbitrarily by humans. For example, ‘Earth’ and ‘space’ are thought of as independent concepts, but in fact, are linked to each other.” In ordinary art museums, people rarely speak to strangers. TeamLab Borderless, on the other hand, includes several pieces that are programmed to become more beautiful as the number of viewers increases, rather than just being viewed individually. Simply put, one's relationship with other viewers can be beneficial. By doing so, TeamLab not only eliminates borders between the artwork and the viewers but also between individual viewers through a unique relationship between viewer and artwork.

  1. So often we think of artists as individuals. Even when artists collaborate, we see it as a group of individuals working together. It really turns this perception on its head to see art produced by a company. Super interesting!

  2. It did more beautiful when many people in the same place to take photo or to feel the installation. And the "Borderless" is a great word to describe this relationship, this installation art and this exhibition.
